There are two governing bodies for men’s and women’s college ice hockey in the United States. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) are the two major governing bodies that field competitive hockey teams.
The NCAA sponsors teams in two divisions for men and women’s ice hockey. There are over 130 men’s teams and over 70 women’s teams competing across the two divisions. The highest level to compete in ice hockey is NCAA Division 1. There are over 60 men’s Division 1 ice hockey teams and over 35 women’s teams.
The ACHA was designed to support and monitor varsity club level ice hockey. The organization has men’s teams in three divisions and women’s teams in two divisions. There are over 430 teams competing across 49 states.
Many college hockey players go on to play professionally either in the NHL or elsewhere. In 2012 there were 301 former collegiate ice hockey players that suited up for the NHL. If you wish to play professionally, college hockey can be a great way to develop your skills while getting an education.
